The Deccan Chargers captain, Kumar Sangakkara, hinted at fielding an
altered squad when they play Delhi Daredevils in a crucial, must win
IPL game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday, 5th of May.
"Changes have to happen in the team at any stage, especially in a
tournament like the IPL because you have to get certain kind of
rhythm”, said Sangakkara, while talking to the media reporters on the
eve of their game against struggling Daredevils. “At the same time, to
break bad habits you cannot keep going with an unchanged side", he
added.
Both Deccan and Delhi are placed in the bottom half of the points
table with six points from nine games each and need to win all of their
remaining five matches of the league stage to keep their hopes of
making final four alive.
Sangakkara conceded that they have their backs to the walls and
every next game would be a must win for them. To ensure Deccan win all
of the ensuing ties, the desperate Sri Lankan said "calculated and
intelligent changes" is the need of the hour
"Sometimes, the induction of a new player might kickstart what we need. So changes at any time are necessary”, said the former Sri Lanka captain.
"We have been making changes in the team according to the opposition
and the wicket. This is going to be no different but drastic changes is
not the way to go about it. Calculated and intelligent changes are the
way to go", he added.
The Islander urged his men not to get distracted by their current
position at the points table. He said all that they need right now is
to believe in themselves and play in the remaining matches with
confidence.
Sangakkara added that they are a good team but unfortunately could
not convert that into winning performances with consistency. He hailed
his bowling armoury, as the best attack in the league - both in pace
and spin. He said that the only area where they lacked in the
tournament so far is overall all-round performance.
