The Indian Premier League’s (IPL) fourth edition is mid-way, as all the participant teams have played a minimum of five matches each. Every match of the tournament competition is expected to be eye-catching, as all teams will be looking to secure crucial two points.
The upcoming matches will be more important in determining the top teams to qualify for the semi-finals.
Royal Challengers Bangalore, under the captaincy of South African, AB de Villiers have played seven matches so far, winning only three. They entered the tournament with a win over debutants Kochi Tuskers Kerala, where de Villiers top scored with an unbeaten 54 runs.
In their next three matches, de Villiers’ men failed to maintain their form and faced consecutive defeats. Their match with Mumbai Indians was abandoned due to rain. However, in the next two clashes, the skipper restored his teams’ form and earned two wins over Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils.
On the other hand, debutant Pune Warriors under the captaincy of Yuvraj Singh got off to a good start to the tournament with a win. As the league progressed, the side lost form and out of their six matches played, they have won only two.
De Villiers not only serves as a captain and batsman, but also as a useful wicket-keeper for RCB. In the first three editions of IPL, he played as a middle-order batsman for Delhi Daredevils and scored a total of 1599 runs.
In the current edition of the tournament, the South African was bought by RCB for US$ 1.1 million. The skipper has shown consistent batting performances and become an inspiration for his team. The all-rounder has a superb batting technique, as he amasses runs at great ease.
The 27-year-old has played 32 T20 Internationals, scoring 604 runs at an average of 23.23, which includes four fifties.
Yuvraj played a significant role in India’s victory in the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2011. The player is known for his big-hitting style that makes him more valuable in the shorter format of the game. With his aggressive batting style, he can dismantle any bowling attack within a matter of overs.
In the inaugural World T20 Cup, he hit six sixes on England pacer Stuart Broad’s bowling in an over, earning himself a great name in the world of cricket. He also plays as a useful left-arm orthodox spinner. Yuvraj has the ability to break crucial partnerships, as he claimed important wickets in the recently concluded mega event.
The 29 year-old, earlier had been playing for Kings XI Punjab in the first three seasons. Playing 22 T20 International innings, he has scored 567 runs at an average of 31.50, including five fifties.
In the current tournament, Singh has not been a successful captain and the left-handed batsman would want to prove a point in the upcoming matches.
Although both teams are poles apart with respect to their win-loss ratio, the competition between the sides can become an interesting one, incase Pune are able to regain the form they showed in their initial matches.
