.John Buchanan who is about to embark on a four-year stint in control of
New Zealand's high-performance program, has said he believes Australia
also needs a Director of Cricket if it wants to climb back to the top of
international cricket rankings
Buchanan, Australia's most successful coach during his tenure from 1999
to 2007, believes such a position need not fundamentally change the role
of head coach Tim Nielsen, whose job will come under scrutiny as part
of the review despite his contract being extended by three years before
the Ashes.
"It (director of cricket) is relatively new in cricket and probably overdue. I"m sure it is [a position that will be considered by other nations] and it will be interesting to see whether Cricket Australia in their review process, what they might recommend in terms of this type of position and their high-performance program," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Buchanan, as saying.
"We have seen it work in a whole range of sports, at AFL and NRL clubs, and it may very well be something Australia looks at. I don"t know that it changes the role of the head coach much because he has his assistants but I imagine it would be on the agenda of a CA review. Whether it's the right time for them, I don"t know," he added.
While coaching will be a focus of inquiry, which is not expected to be finished until August, there is already a changing of the guard around the states. Departing Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss is expected to take over in NSW, Darren Berry and Darren Lehmann have been installed in South Australia and Queensland, respectively, and former South African coach Mickey Arthur is a season into his contract with Western Australia, as well as being offered a consultant"s role at the Centre of Excellence.
Buchanan expects to be watching from a distance when New Zealand visits Australia for two Tests in November. "The idea is to be hands off rather than hands on," he said.
