Pakistan coach Waqar Younis said he expects his new-look side to continue making strides on their tour of the Caribbean.
Waqar was speaking ahead of a series of five One-day Internationals against West Indies which opens on Saturday (today) at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
The former fast-bowler said he was excited about his side’s performance at the World Cup, where they made the semifinals, and expected them to replicate that performance over the coming weeks in the Caribbean.
“The boys have done a wonderful job especially in the World Cup,” he said.
“We knew if we played well, cricket interest would come back in the country. The only way we could have done that was to do well.
“It is the first time in our history that we have lost in a semifinal or even before that stage, and going back home and being praised. I am really pleased the way the people started understanding cricket.”
For the trip to the Caribbean, the Pakistan selectors injected some fresh blood into the side, and Waqar said he was looking forward to good performances from them.
“We have brought some young cricketers on this tour,” he said. “It’s a rebuilding sort of phase.
“I hope these youngsters do well in the international arena and do well on this trip.” Pakistan stumbled at the first major hurdle of this tour when West Indies beat them by seven runs in Thursday’s Twenty20 international. But Pakistan easily defeated West Indies in the World Cup quarter-finals in Dhaka.
