The director of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise, Siddharth Mallya, has said that his team showed a lot of character by securing first position in the points table of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).
Siddharth, who is the son of RCB owner, Vijay Mallya, stated that after losing three consecutive games earlier in the tournament, the Challengers roared back into the competition and proved their worth.
He further asked critics to seal their lips as they now have nothing to talk about.
"After our first win, we unfortunately lost our three next games. The commentary team wrote us off, the journalists wrote us off, the critics wrote us off. They said we had selected a wrong team. Where is (Rahul) Dravid? Where is (Robin) Uthappa? they asked", Mallya said during a promotional event.
The director admitted that three defeats in a row reduced team confidence but the players did a marvellous job and made a strong comeback later in the event. Considering team-effort as key to success, he added, "To bounce back from there, it shows the character of the team. We have created a new IPL record of winning seven games in a row and were unbeaten in eight consecutive games if we include the one washed away by rain. We are here on our merit. However, we still have a long way to go".
The junior Mallya also lauded Chris Gayle for his fantastic batting performances throughout the tournament. Gayle is currently the leading run-scorer in the ongoing competition with 511 runs in nine innings and Mallya termed Gayle as the key man in RCB’s fabulous IPL campaign so far.
The Challengers are scheduled to face defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, in the 1st qualifier today at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Mallya hoped that the players will continue their good work in the crucial game and storm into the final clash.
Citing the fourth season of the cash-rich league as "sugarfree candyfloss" without Lalit Modi, Mallya expressed that even though the IPL ratings had not been great this year, people across the globe have been provided thoroughly entertaining cricket.
