Pakistan have gained control of the second test against the West Indies, taking place at the Warner Park in St. Kitts. The tourists resumed their second innings at the overnight score of 202/3 and piled on the runs with Taufeeq Umar and Misbah-ul-Haq posting contrasting hundreds.
Umar, who was unbeaten on 97 at the start of the day’s play, completed his fifth hundred in the longest format of the game.
He was eventually sent packing after a 129-run stand with his captain Misbah-ul-Haq. He was run out as he ambled a single and was caught napping by a direct hit by Darren Sammy.
Misbah continued to dominate the hosts as he was in sparking form, and unlike his usually dour approach, laid into the bowling attack.
He made full use of his stroking repertoire to post his third hundred in Test cricket, his innings included 2 mighty sixes and 10 fours besides some quickly run singles and twos.
He succeeded in upping the tempo with the belligerent Umar Akmal who hit a brace of sixes himself in his breezy 30. Akmal was undone by Devendra Bishoo.
Pakistan declared their innings as soon as Misbah reached his hundred via an edged four through the slips. The visitors sat the hosts a target of 427 runs on a wearing wicket, the West Indians would have to improve their own record of 418 runs chased against Australia in Antigua if they are to record a win.
The chase got off to an inauspicious start, debutant Kraigg Brathwaite was sent packing by a brilliant in swinger by Tanvir Ahmed that sent his off stump for a walk.
Darren Bravo and Lendl Simmons took the hosts to tea without further damage, Bravo was the more assured of the two and smoked two big sixes off Abdur Rehman shortly before the interval.
Pakistan would be aiming to make further inroads after the interval as they push for a series leveling win.
