Naved-ul-Hasan shines in Sussex victory over Somerset

Naved-ul-Hasan shines in Sussex victory over Somerset

Sussex cruised to an eight wicket victory in a match of the County Championship Division One, againstSomerset, at the County Ground, Hove in England.
The home team chased down a target of 272 runs easily, losing only two wickets. The star of the show for Sussex was Pakistan’s medium-pacer, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, who claimed 10 wickets in the match.
Michael Yardy, who is the skipper of the home team, won the toss and chose to field first. He expected the pitch to ease out with the passage of time and stated that batting last would be ideal. There was some moisture beneath the surface of the wicket and the ball did quite a few tricks in the first few overs of the day.
However, the Somerset openers, Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah, did a terrific job, coping with the bowling friendly conditions. The pair put together 71 runs for the first wicket before Suppiah was sent back to the pavilion after adding 31 runs to the total.
Trescothick played a captain’s knock for his team, scoring 63 runs with the help of 12 fours and one towering six. Things were looking quite good for the visitors, as they were 117 for the loss of just one wicket at one stage. However, the middle-order failed miserably and the entire team was dismissed for 213 runs.
Naved-ul-Hasan was exceptional with the ball for Sussex, picking up a five-wicket haul. He was unable to take wickets with the new ball, but did a terrific job afterwards, troubling the opposition with the older ball.
Batting didn’t become any easier, when Sussex came out to bat in their first innings. The team lost their first eight wickets for just 95 runs on the board and things looked grim for them.
However, a fight from the tail-end batsman, James Anyon, took the team’s total to 177. He scored a valiant 51 off 82 balls with the help of nine fours and was the last man to be dismissed in the home team’s innings.
Peter Trego was the pick of the bowlers for Somerset, taking four wickets in the innings.
Somerset were yet again given a tremendous start by their openers, as they scored a 102 run stand for the first wicket.
Trescothick continued his good form and scored 79 runs for his team. He got good support from Suppiah, who managed 38 runs in his second outing.
The visitors’ first-drop, Nick Compton, was also in good touch, scoring 44 runs. However, the lower-order failed yet again and the team was all out for 235.
Naved-ul-Hasan was again in the spotlight for his five-for in the second innings.
Sussex had no problems in the second innings, as their openers put together 201 runs for the first wicket. Ed Joyce was dismissed after scoring 84 runs whereas his opening partner, Chris Nash, scored a brilliant ton for his team. He was sent back to the pavilion after adding 120 runs to the total.
Luke Wells and Murray Goodwin scored 32 and 27 runs respectively, guiding their side to victory.
Steve Kirby and Lewis Gregory took one wicket apiece and none other bowler was able to cause any problems for the batsmen.
