Pakistan’s leg spinner, Danish Kaneria, has asked Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to contact his English county Essex in order to get a clearance certificate.
Kaneria has been out of Test cricket since Pakistan’s tour of England in 2010, as he was dropped due to poor performance.
However, the leg spinner was selected for the team to play the Test series against South Africa in United Arab Emirates. PCB withdrew him from the squad later on, stating that the integrity committee of PCB had not cleared him.
Since then Kaneria has been out of Pakistan’s team and has been allowed to play domestic cricket in Pakistan, which is surprising, considering he is not eligible for national selection.
The leg spinner said that he contacted the Chief Executive (CEO) of Essex county, David East, who was surprised, PCB was not clearing Kaneria. The CEO told the leg spinner to ask PCB to contact Essex’s management.
Danish said, “David East said he and his lawyer couldn’t understand what sort of clarification letter the PCB needs? He told me that if the board has any reservations about the letter they have earlier sent then the PCB concerned officials should directly contact him”.
Kaneria was involved in a spot-fixing scandal during the early part of 2010 season while playing for Essex but he was later released from the case.
The leg spinner defended himself by saying, “Essex re-signed me after I was released by the national team. They would have never done so if they had any sort of suspicion on my character. The matter of signing of any player goes through two stages one with the counties and the other with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)”.
