According to sources, there is a possibility that the Pakistan Cricket Board may sack Shahid Afridi and appoint test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq or opening batsman Mohammad Hafeez, as Pakistan’s One Day International captain.
"But the chairman is still not happy with Afridi and it will decided tomorrow whether the board retains him as captain and player for the one-day series in Ireland or decides to either ask Misbah to lead the team in Irelandor opt for Mohammad Hafeez," the source said.
The chairman of the PCB will meet the chairman of the selection committee, Mohsin Khan, in Lahore today to decide the destiny of Afridi as Pakistan’s limited over skipper.
As per news, the board chairman has asked Mohsin to make changes in Pakistan’s squad for the two One Day International matches against Ireland. During the meeting today, both will finalize the names of the players.
"Initially it was thought that the same team that is playing the Tests in the West Indies should also be retained for the two one-dayers. But after Pakistan lost the first Test to the West Indies, the board chairman now wants the selectors to send some specialist one-day players for the Ireland matches as he is not keen on seeing more defeats," the source added.
Afridi is leading team Pakistan in twenty20 and ODI format of the game meanwhile Misbah-ul-Haq is the skipper of test side.
The PCB was not happy with the Afridi for making bold statements to underline sensitive issues in public.
After arriving in Pakistan from the Caribbean tour, the star all-rounder highlighted the differences in team management. He went ahead to say that people should not interfere in other peoples’ work.
This statement has forced the governing body of cricket in Pakistan to send a show-cause notice to Afridi, asking for an explanation.
After receiving a show-cause notice from the PCB, the captain of the shorter version of the game was more focused on developing improved coordination within the team and officials to set the right tone for the World Twenty20 Championship in Sri Lanka next year.
However, now it is not easy for Afridi to keep himself in the good books of the board’s boss, Ijaz Butt.
