Tillakaratne Dilshan and Tharanga Paranavitana consolidate Sri Lanka against England Lions – Lankan tour of England

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Tharanga Paranavitana smashed centuries in their second innings against EnglandLions on the third day of the tour match and accumulated a 165-run overall lead. The match is being played at County Ground, Derby from May 19 to May 22, 2011.
Sri Lanka won the toss on the first day and offered the batting to England Lions, who gave a poor response while losing two wickets for 47 runs. The third wicket partnership between James Taylor and Captain James Hildreth earned them 58 runs and the fourth wicket contributed 57 runs.
Eoin Morgan and Samit Patel produced a match winning partnership of 266 runs for the fifth wicket and Patelwas the fifth batsman to go, but not before posting 119 runs and enhancing the total to 428 runs.
Morgan knocked the doors for his selection in the first Test by powering 193 runs off 226 balls with the help of five sixes and 30 fours.
England Lions declared their innings for 493 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 109 overs.
Thisara Perera and Dilhara Fernando were the two leading bowlers for Sri Lanka by taking three wickets each while Nuwan Pradeep and Suraj Randiv shared one wicket each.
The Lankan Lions gave a nice start and provided 59 runs for the first wicket but the second wicket fell at 71 run followed by the third at 72 runs.
Their decline continued due to the excellent bowling by England Lions and six wickets were lost at 97 runs.
The seventh wicket contributed 60 runs while the major association of 89 runs was witnessed between Randiv and Perera for the eighth wicket. Randiv remained unbeaten on 76 runs and Perera had scored 47 runs when they were bowled out at 266 runs in 63.4 overs.
Jade Dernbach wrecked the Lankan batting by grabbing five wickets, Graham Onions and Ajmal Shahzadshared two wickets each as Patel took one wicket.
Sri Lanka fell short of 227 runs in the first innings and a follow on was forced on them.
Captain Dilshan and Paranavitana opened their second innings with determination and punished the England Lions bowlers at will. Dilshan was especially very severe, punching every loose delivery he faced, utilised all scoring balls by dispatching them all around the park and completed his century in the process.
The pair contributed 200 runs for the first wicket and Dilshan was the first batsman to go back to the pavilion after playing a dashing innings of 117 runs off 110 balls, assisted with two sixes and 17 fours.
Paranavitana also completed his patient century and scored 125 runs off 216 balls which comprised 18 fours.
Thilan Samaraweera and Randiv were unbeaten on 54 and 19 runs respectively at the close of the third day’s play.
Sri Lanka achieved a total of 392 runs for the loss of six wickets and took a lead of 165 runs in their second innings.
Steven Finn claimed two wickets while Onions, Shahzad, Dernbach and Ravi Bopara shared one wicket each from England Lions.
Sri Lanka would like to score around 250 runs before they think of declaring, on the other hand, England Lionswill try to fold the Lankans as early as possible and give them a taste of their first defeat in the tour.
