Zimbabwe cricket is concentrating on fast bowling and less attention is being given to the spin bowling for their future international commitments. Spinners were the backbone of their team for the last couple of years and the fast bowling department was being neglected.
Zimbabwe’s national coach, Alan Butcher, ascertains that they can challenge the rival cricket playing nations only by promoting fast bowling. Butcher commented while talking to ‘The Independent’ in Zimbabwe:
"We are working with about 14 fast and medium-fast bowlers hoping that they will be fine-tuned to get them ready for the Test matches. In the limited-over games we would get away with playing three or four spinners and one fast bowler but for the Tests we will need more of the fast bowlers”.
They will be playing a home Test series against Bangladesh, which will be very important for them. They can leave an impact on their return to the longer version of the game by giving good performances against them.
Zimbabwe will be facing Australia ‘A’ in a couple of four day matches and later on play a one day series, which will also involve South Africa. They will assess their capabilities in these matches and will analyse if they have achieved enough for the challenging format of Test cricket.
Zimbabwe is grooming quite a few youngsters and special camps have been arranged to pick the young talent throughout the country.
"We have a number of young bowlers that we have brought in and we will have to fast-track some of them so that they are ready for our first Test against Bangladesh. It is a big challenge and Test matches are more challenging but we are confident we can get them ready well in time".
Zimbabwe was able to win just two matches in the World Cup against minnows, Kenya, and Canada, otherwise they were beaten badly by the major cricket playing nations in their pool.
The new crop of fast bowlers for Zimbabwe consists of three emerging speedsters, who have shown their promise in national cricket.
Tendai Chatara born on 28th February, 1991 is just 20 years old and was at the top by claiming 55 wickets in Logan Cup.
Another promising all rounder Keegan Meth has grabbed 54 wickets in the above tournament and gave an excellent performance in the final by clinching 13 wickets for 109 runs.
They are rich in the fast bowling department and have Ian Nicolson, Njabulo Ncube, and, Kyle Jarvis, who will be the future of the pace attack for the country.
Zimbabwe anticipates that the crop of fast bowlers will assist current national heroes such as, Chris Mpofu, Shingi Masakadza, and, Ed Rainsford, who are giving their best.
Butcher believes that the future of Zimbabwe cricket will be bright, going by the sheer contribution of upcoming fast bowlers.
