Former Pakistani fast bowler, Aaqib Javed, has
emerged as one of the strongest candidates to take over the role of
Pakistan coach after the resignation by Waqar Younis.
The tour of Zimbabwe
will be Waqar’s last assignment as the coach of the national team and
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not decided upon his successor.
However, sources in PCB have claimed that Aaqib is the strongest
candidate presently.
Aaqib was the assistant coach of Waqar Younis since thelast one year but he was removed from the post recently as PCB made some important changes in the team management.
On the condition of anonymity, an authentic source
in the PCB said that there is a certain group which is working in
favour of the former fast bowler to become the coach of the national
team. However, a final decision will be taken once
the Chairman PCB, Ijaz Butt returns back to Pakistan.
The source said, "The deliberations on who will be the next coach will only began after the chairman of the board, Ijaz Butt returns from India this week. It is too early to say anything but with the lobby going strong one can't rule out
Aaqib as a strong candidate to be the next coach.”
Aaqib has been a great servant of Pakistan cricket
over the years, both as a player and as a coach. He mentored the junior
teams of Pakistan and proved his credentials. This is the reason why some of the former cricketers in the country
are backing Aaqib to take over the job.
Former Pakistan cricketer and coach, Mudassar Nazar
is among the people who are supporting Aaqib. He believes that the
former fast bowler has everything it takes to be a high class coach.
"I have a lot of faith in Aaqib Javed
as he has come through the Pakistani system. He's been working in
different roles for nearly the last 10 years. He's a damn good coach and
I think they should appoint Aaqib," Mudassar said.
