At the close of the second day of the fourth Test at the Oval, the
hosts England posted a humongous tally of 457 runs on the board for the
loss of three wickets with Ian Bell on 181 runs and night-watchman James Anderson on three off 18 deliveries.
Earlier, the English openers started the day’s proceedings in a bid to increase their overnight tally of 75 runs without any loss. Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook attempted for forge a dangerous partnership, however, the Indians managed to make a breakthrough on the penultimate delivery of the 27th over when Cook was caught by Virender Sehwag at first slip off the bowling of Ishant Sharma. At this point in time England had not added a run to their tally as Cook walked back to the pavilion after having scored 34 runs off 87 deliveries.
However, Ian Bell on his arrival managed to control things in the middle as he tried to form a formidable innings with the skipper.
India then grabbed the wicket of Strauss, who after playing a knock of 40 runs off 106 deliveries was caught behind by wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni off the bowling of Shanthakumaran Sreesanth. At the time of his departure the home side had managed to put 97 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets.
At this point in time, India felt they were creeping back in the game; however, the arrival of England’s outstanding all-rounder Kevin Pietersen crushed India’s hopes of making a comeback as the 31-year-old all-rounder forged a spectacular partnership with Bell.
The two batsmen took the air out of the Indian bowling attack as they played superbly by disallowing India to make a breakthrough.
The way the two batsmen were batting, it was imminent that England were going to end up putting a mammoth total on the board if India failed to halt the duo of Bell and KP.
Both batsmen managed to score their well deserved centuries as they left the Indian bowlers dejected. The batsmen posted 350 runs in the third wicket partnership as they took the game away from the tourists. The partnership was finally broken when KP after playing an astounding innings of 175 runs was caught and bowled by Suresh Raina in the 117th over.
India now have a daunting task to halt the hosts on the third day from posting a score which might be too big for India to overcome.
