The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB),
Subhan Ahmed has revealed that the board will start to search for the
new coach for the national team after Eid holidays in the country.
The current coach of Pakistan cricket team and legendary fast bowler, Waqar Younis resigned recently, citing some health issue and the need to spend some time with his family. The on-going tour of Zimbabwe is going to be Waqar’s last assignment as the mentor of the Green Shirts.
PCB still has its options open and could go for a foreign coach or a local one as well. Former Pakistan coach, Geoff Lawson, has urged PCB to go for a foreign coach as he would not indulge himself in any kind of local politics.
Whereas, another ex-coach and former opening batsman, Mudasar Nazar has opined in favour of former fast bowler Aaqib Javed to be made the coach because of his tremendous coaching skills and the ability to go along well with the players.
Subhan expressed that PCB is also considering former Australian cricketer, Dave Whatmore, who has coached Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in past. He said that PCB still has about a month to finalize the new coach of the national team and they want to take a decision which is in the best interest of Pakistan.
The COO said, "Whether it is Dav Whatmore or any other foreign coach we are not discounting out anyone. Whatmore is working in India but obviously we can have talks with him. Obviously we have until early October to finalise things after which the national team has an hectic international schedule starting with the Sri Lankan series in the UAE."
PCB is going to form a committee, which is going to make the final verdict regarding the replacement of Waqar Younis and the board is looking for a long term option in order to create some consistency in the Green Shirts.
"The committee has to decide what is best for Pakistan cricket. Our team is in a transition phase and we need to have a long term arrangement," Subhan added.
