West Indies
have announce a revamped out-fit for the Twenty20 matches in England
next month due to conflicts with the champions League T20 tournament.
Four novices have been included in the West Indies squad, while at least
seven
members who would have made a full strength side, have been ruled out
of the T20 clashes.
The two Twenty20s are scheduled for September 23 and 25, at The Oval.
The rookies include batsmen Miles Bascombe and Johnson Charles, wicketkeeper Derwin Christian and all-rounder Nkruma Bonner.
The 25-year-old Bascombe belongs to St.
Vincent and is a promising batsman who has represented the West Indies
A, while Charles is a 22-year-old batsman and belongs to St. Lucian. He
represents Windward Islands and has been a part
of West Indies A as well.
All-rounder Bonner is a 22-year-old who is a
leg-spinner and belongs to Jamaica. He has been training in Barbados in a
Sagicor high Performance Centre.
The wicketkeeper Christian, is the most
seasoned of all the rookies as the other three apprentices have played
only a dozen matches of each format. Christian has been representing
Guyana since 2005 and has played 40 first-class matches.
Power hitters like Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo, Lendl Simmons, Adrian Barath and Dwayne Bravo
have been ruled out of the T20 out-fit; while Gayle, Pollard and Dwayne
Bravo have not been included this year since they
did not play the domestic T20 tournament, the other three are playing
for Trinidad and Tobago in the Champions League along with medium-pacer Ravi Rampaul.
Darren Sammy will lead the Caribbean in the T20 matches in England and will continue to captain the side in all formats of the game for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh and India.
Clyde Butts, the West Indies Chairman of selectors, was delighted with the promise shown by the youngsters.
"Bascombe is a Twenty20 player who has shown signs that he can take apart bowling attacks at the top of the order," Butts said.
"Charles has been consistent in the past two
years and has shown that he is capable of understanding the requirements
of batting in the opening position in the shortest format," he added.
Butts added that Nkruma has also had exceptional information from the Sagicor HPC batting Coach Carl Hooper, a former West Indian off-spinner.
He also praised Christian as he played
superbly in the last West Indies domestic T20 and finished the
proceedings in favour of Guyana. He is a belligerent batsman who can be a
match winner later down the order for the Caribbean.
West Indies squad: Darren Sammy (capt), Christopher Barnwell, Miles Bascombe, Devendra Bishoo, Nkruma Bonner, Johnson Charles, Derwin Christian (wk), Fidel Edwards, Danza Hyatt, Ashley Nurse, Andre Russell, Marlon
