Lack of evidence against Salman Butt

Salman Butt’s lawyer told a jury during the alleged spot-fixing trial that while there might have been a “criminal conspiracy” between tainted agent Mazhar Majeed and fast bowler Mohammad Amir – but any wrongdoing could not be included with regards to his client, CricInfo reported on Monday.
The report quoted Butt’s lawyer Ali Bajwa telling the jury “there was, at the very minimum, a criminal conspiracy between Majeed and Amir,” and the only reason that his client (Butt) was being prosecuted was “because of the words of his former friend and agent, Mazhar Majeed”.
He said that while the evidence was stacked up against Mohammad Amir, which the defence conceded, there was little or no evidence of any wrongdoing on part of Butt
Butt along with former team-mate Mohammad Asif are facing charges of conspiracy to cheat, and conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, following that Lord’s Test in August last year when they allegedly conspired with Majeed, teenage fast bowler Amir and other people unknown to bowl pre-planned no-balls. While Mohammad Amir has confessed to his involvement, the trials are now focussing on Butt and Asif who are denying the charges.
Reuters adds
Speaking of his pride at being selected for the national side, Butt said “to represent Pakistan was the greatest honour of my life.”
Explaining why police found nine mobile phone Sim cards in his hotel room after the scandal broke, Butt said it was cheaper to buy local phone cards when he was on tour overseas.
The cricketer also said he brought about $12,000 in cash with him to England last year with the aim of buying a special edition-watch costing around 8,000 pounds. ($1 = 0.633 British Pounds).
