Form is temporary but class is permanent, says Shahid Afridi

Former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Shahid Khan Afridi, believes that every sportsman goes through lean patches in his career and some bad performances do not mean that the player has gone past his best.

Boom Boom started his career as a right-arm leg-spinner but he made a name for himself as a hard-hitting batsman. However, he failed to deliver the goods consistently as a batsman and as a result; he was dropped from the national team in 2003.

However, he got a new life as an international cricketer when he started concentrating on his bowling once again and became one of the most dangerous bowlers in limited-overs cricket. The all-rounder played a massive role for Pakistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and became the highest wicket-taker of the tournament along with India’s Zaheer Khan.

Since the last couple of months, Afridi has gone through some rough times in international cricket as he failed to make an impression in the series against England and then for most part of the Asia Cup 2012.

The leg-spinner bounced his way back to form in the final of the tournament as he made some useful contributions with both bat and ball and was named as the Player of the Match.

Afridi admits that he was under a lot of pressure to perform before the final and he is relieved now. He feels that form is temporary but class is permanent and the cricket fans must understands this. He expressed that every player goes through highs and lows in his career.

The former captain said, "It lifted a lot of pressure off my shoulders but more importantly it helped Pakistan win the title. To my critics, I will say just one thing: haven't you heard of players going through a lean patch? It happens to even the greatest sportsmen then why is that I cannot be spared during my bad patch?"

The all-rounder also claims to be completely fit and is geared up to play for his country for many years to come.

"I'm fully fit at the moment and plan to continue working hard to make sure that I give my 100% for Pakistan each time I represent the country," he added.
