Harbhajan Singh, the right-arm off-spinner, has been appointed as the captain of Mumbai Indians for Indian Premier League season five, after the iconic batsman, Sachin Tendulkar, decided to step down from the post.
Sachin, who during the Asia Cup 2012 completed his 100th international century, showed faith in Harbhajan and recommended him for the duty to the management of Mumbai Indians.
MI officials have confirmed the news. A press release from the IPL franchise read, “Sachin Tendulkar in discussion with the management of Mumbai Indians has decided to hand over the responsibilities of captaining Mumbai Indians in season V of the Indian Premier League to ace off spinner Harbhajan Singh.”
Sachin made up his mind to play IPL5 under Harbhajan’s stewardship, as he wanted to take some time off from the added responsibility. The Little Master had a meeting with owners of MI, Mukesh and Nita Ambani, where he informed them about his intentions.
Obliged by the support Mukesh and Nita gave him, Sachin said, “After due consideration, I discussed my intention to hand over the captainship of the team to Harbhajan Singh, with Mukesh bhai and Nita bhabhi. I was touched by the graciousness and wholehearted support they offered me while emphasising that they would accept any decision which helps me to continue enjoying the game.”
Harbhajan is not new to captaincy. The off-spinner lead MI to glory in Champions League 2011, as Sachin was ruled out of tournament with an injury. The Mumbai Indians are yet to win an IPL trophy, though they reached the finals of the tournament in 2010.
MI will fancy their chances this time around, as they have a very strong squad for the event. Mumbai Indians' IPL season 5 kicks-off with a game against defending champions Chennai Super Kings, the match will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday, April 4, 2012.
