Sachin’s injured right index finger will, in all probability, keep him out of Mumbai Indians' IPL5 fixture against the Rajasthan Royals at home on Wednesday. This was revealed by the mentor and bowling coach of the MI, Shaun Pollock.
The South African however, rubbished reports that the Master Blaster might miss the entire IPL season due to his injury and he hopes that he will be completely fit before their next match against the Delhi Daredevils next week.
"It's a long tournament, so we give him every chance, every game to see if he will be fit. I am not sure about tomorrow, whether there will be enough time [for him to be fit],” said Pollock at the pre-match conference at Wankhede on the eve of the match. “I think by the time the 16th game [against Delhi Daredevils here] comes around, everything should be fine [with Tendulkar]," the former South African captain added.
Sachin Tendulkar sustained a finger injury during the opening match of the latest edition against the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk last week. He was hit on the hand by a bouncy delivery by Doug Bollinger, forcing the little maestro to retire hurt. Although an X-ray has confirmed that there is nothing serious, the Mumbai team management wants to give him ample time to recover fully before making a comeback to the field.
In the absence of Sachin, the selectors have tried Ambati Rayudu and T Suman as partners to the explosive South African opener Richard Levi. Pollock was pleased with the way Suman played against the Deccan Chargers the other night at Vizag.
"I thought Suman played quite well but it was a brilliant catch by Dale Steyn, and it was a wonderful over from Dale, a brilliant yorker," said Pollock.
The Mumbai Indians have won two of the three matches they have played so far. Their only defeat had come at the hands of tournament underdogs, the Pune Warriors. The hosts are currently fourth on the points table, and a victory against table toppers, the Rajasthan Royals will see Harbhajan-led Mumbai side moving to the top of the table.
