Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim wants luck gods to be with his team in the upcoming World T20 Championship, which gets underway in Sri Lanka on September 18, and will run until October 7.
While addressing the pre-tournament press conference in Colombo, on Thursday, the wicketkeeper batsman said that his side was capable of “doing anything” on their day.
Bangladesh have been drafted in Group D, along with two tough sides, Pakistan and New Zealand, in the latest edition of the T20 World Cup. But Mushfiqur is taking heart from his side’s impressive show in the quadrangular Asia Cup, in March, which they finished as losing finalists.
The Bengali Tigers, the hosts for this year’s regional tournament, managed to reach the tournament final after beating South Asian cricketing giants Sri Lanka and India, before losing the enthralling final to Pakistan, by just three runs.
Reminiscing upon their close defeat at the hands of Men in Green in the Asia Cup final, the Bangladesh skipper said that they were just unlucky to lose the Asia Cup final, and hoped luck to be with them in the T20 showpiece.
"It [The Asia Cup] was a huge tournament for us, especially because we beat India and Sri Lanka and nearly beat Pakistan twice," said Mushfiqur. "In tournaments like the Asia Cup, you need a bit of luck along with the skills and we missed that luck in the final. So if the luck is in our favour in this tournament, we can do anything,” he added further.
The 24-year-old Bogra wicketkeeper batsman also played down the favourites talk saying in the shortest format of the game one can never predict the favourite.
"In the Twenty20 format you never know who the favourite is,” said the Bengali skipper, who has led the side in eight T20 Internationals, winning five of those and losing only three.
“On a particular day if you can do well in all three departments you can beat anyone. Also it is very important to play consistent cricket in T20s,” he added further.
The Tigers are schedule to play two warm-up matches against Zimbabwe (September 15) and Ireland (September 17), and Mushfiqur vowed to do well in both the games and take the momentum into the mega event.
