Royal Challengers Bangalore captain, Daniel Vettori, has blamed poor bowling for his team’s embarrassing six-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings in the 1st qualifier of the Indian Premier League on Tuesday, May 24, 2011.
Despite being the second favourite team in the crucial contest, the Super Kings thrashed RCB comprehensively and stormed into the big final of the cash-rich Twenty20 league.
Put into bat first, the Challengers posted a challenging score of 175, courtesy of fabulous batting by Virat Kohli.
In response, the Super Kings took a lazy start, losing a couple of wicket in the first two overs.
However, Suresh Raina took the responsibility and led his side to an emphatic victory by hitting a fantastic unbeaten innings of 73 runs.
The brilliant 46-run partnership of between Raina and Albie Morkel proved to be the difference at the end of the day and Vettori admitted that his bowlers did not bowl well in the death overs.
"We were in control for most of the game. We didn't bowl well in the last five overs. They have got quality players. We bowled too many balls that could be hit for a six. (Suresh) Raina played a good innings," Vettori said.
Responding to the question about his team’s strategy against the in-form West Indian opener, Chris Gayle, the former Kiwi skipper added, "It was a good match and it's just that we ended up on the losing side. We would have been happy with that at the start of the day. Whether Chris (Gayle) got runs or not, our bowling particularly at the end let us down. We have to get better in the last five overs."
The Challengers still have a chance to compensate for their mistakes as they will face the winners of today’s contest between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, in the second qualifier on Friday, May 27, 2011.
Vettori urged his bowlers to come up with more discipline as there will not be any room to make errors in the next game.
Terming the next match as very crucial, the off-spinner stated that he is confident that the players will make a strong comeback and perform out of their skins in the next encounter.
