The managers and organizers of the Indian Premier League (IPL) are socked to know the results of a survey conducted by a British consultancy firm, Brand Finance.
The study stats paint a very gloomy picture of the IPL as the brand value and TV viewership of the tournament have fallen to a murderous extent.
The research reveals that the IPL brand value has decreased by 11 percent as it is currently recorded as $3.67 billion against last year’s $4.1 billion.
The TV viewership of the ongoing IPL-4 tournament has suffered a slump of almost 22 percent.
As the 74-match IPL 2011 started just six days after the 6-week long ICC Cricket World Cup, analysts and experts argue that the excessive game has set in a cricket fatigue. The cricket lovers, especially the Indians, have become fed up of the game.
According to another survey, the Indian households prefer to watch movies and dramas instead of IPL matches during prime time Television.
The study also shows that IPL fans are not happy with the addition of two new teams, Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala, as they think that this has made the tournament unnecessarily lengthy and boring.
An Indian sports management firm, Cornerstone, Chief Executive, Bunty Sajdeh, says, “There is an overkill of cricket.”
This view is widely held by a majority of the Indians who are short on money and time to watch cricket for such a long period.
For many Indians, the IPL teams, which contain players from multiple nations, are of no value as they have no emotional attachment with them.
The Indians are well-known for their overwhelming nationalist passions and they like the only games that feature their national cricketers.
Another factor the study has pointed out is that the fans are averse to watch a player, who played for their side in past seasons, playing for a rival team.
Some cricket lovers have answered that the termination of Lalit Modi, the founder and promoter of IPL, has affected the public interest in the tournament to a great extent.
Modi was axed by an Indian court a few month back after the charges of corruption against him proved to be true.
