The World Cup winning captain of Team India, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has succeeded in clinching the 10th position in the SposrtsPro magazine’s list of the most successful sports personality.
The Indian legend has even outstripped the Tennis superstar, Rafael Nadal, and Basketball hero, Kobe Bryant.
During Dhoni’s captaincy tenure, the Men in Blue have claimed victories in many international tournaments and series. India won the T20 World title in 2007 and became the first nation to lift the ICC World Cup Trophy on home soil in 2011.
Dhoni also led the Chennai Super Kings to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2010 title. During the ongoing IPL season, he is leading the side to the finals.
The Indian rock-star has already made inroads in Time magazine’s top 100 most influential personalities of the world. He has the honour to be at the top of five Indians who are included in the magazine’s list.
In the SportsPro Magazine, the top spot is held by Jamaican sprint king, Usain Bolt. The third and fourth position goes to football stars, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi respectively.
Dhoni’s teammate, Yuvraj Singh, who was named as ‘Man of the Tournament, holds the 49th spot in the magazine.
The only female in the magazine is Caroline Wozniacki.
Commenting on Dhoni’s honour, SportsPro editior, David Cushnan, says, “MS Dhoni’s marketability has reached another new high in India in the aftermath of the cricket World Cup”.
He further elaborates, “Although he will never attain quite the Messianic status that Sachin Tendulkar has with the Indian population, Dhoni has undeniably the number one choice for those looking to boost their brand in the south-eastern Asian country”.
After leading India to World Cup glory, Dhoni has become a marketing goldmine. He is featuring in top 20 brands of India as a model and brand ambassador. He is also working with the Indian Election Commission as a brand ambassador.
Dhoni is glad to have the honour the magazine has given him. He thanks the magazine editors and his fans who, he thinks, have enabled him to bag success.
