After winning the toss, Punjab’s skipper, Adam Gilchrist, elected to field first.
His plan backfired as the Deccan Chargers racked up a formidable 198-run total after losing just two wickets.
In response to Deccan’s massive total of 198, Punjab’s batting line-up started shackling in the early stages of their Chase.
Paul Valthaty departed after scoring just 5 runs in the second over and the left-handed, Aussie batsman,Shaun Marsh, followed him, courtesy JP Duminy.
At 2/22 in 2.6 overs, it became evident that for Punjab to record their 5th victory on a trot, a monumental effort was required from their skipper, Adam Gilchrist.
However, after scoring 51 runs off 37 deliveries, Gilchrist had to walk back to pavilion and Punjab’s hopes to qualify went with him. He was caught hammering a full-length delivery from Daniel Christian.
The asking rate was going up and the incoming batsmen were under extreme pressure. Unable to deal with the situation, batsmen fell and wickets kept tumbling.
Except for the skipper, Adam Gilchrist, nobody was able to put up a fighting performance from Punjab’s dug out.
Kings XI got cheaply shot out at 116 runs after facing 19 overs. The Deccan side however, deserved this win, especially after they bowled and fielded with great discipline.
From the Deccan side, Amit Mishra, was the top bowler, claiming 4 wickets for just 9 runs. The spinner also claimed his first hat-trick of the season, scalping Daniel Christian, Mandeep Singh and Ryan Harris.
Earlier, Deccan’s opening partnership went on to 131 runs in 13.1 overs. Shikhar Dhawan who opened the innings for Deccan Chargers, continued the onslaught by scoring 60 runs from 41 deliveries, throwing Punjab out of the competition.
