Tony Greig, the former English skipper, has stirred up a fresh controversy by commenting in a TV interview, that the former Australian pacer, Dennis Lillee, was a ‘bit of a fairy’ after getting hit on the field.
Both Tony and Lillee had been world renowned contemporary cricketers of 1970s.
Tony, who started as a Television commentator with an Australian TV after his retirement from the international cricket, is notorious for his bias against the Aussies. He has displayed his anti-Australian venom on many occasions before.
It is the second controversy in a row. A day back, Tony annoyed the mighty Board of Control for Cricket inIndia (BCCI) by saying that the International Cricket Council (ICC) should have shunned the undue influence of the board and made independent decisions regarding the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS).
Tony, the South African born all-rounder, scored a Test ton against Lillee at Brisbane in 1974, since then, he has been critical of Lillee.
Tony is one of the most controversial figures in International cricket. His ubiquitous controversy theories have overshadowed his excellent career. Now, most of the analysts overlook Tony while mentioning the great legends of 70s.
An Australian writer, David Tossell, has written a biography of Tony with the title, “Tony Greig: A Reappraisal of English Cricket’s Most Controversial Captain.”
In his interview, Tony told, “I think they thought they had some sort of exclusivity on it and they did not like it. There were people like Dennis Lillee, who was a past master at letting people have it, but he was a bit of a fairy when he got hit himself.”
Tony lost England captaincy for allegedly recruiting several top cricketers of the time for an Australian TV programme, ‘World Series Cricket’ that was hosted by Kerry Packer.
The Aussies and their fans are much infuriated at Tony’s remarks, which are being considered as irresponsible and partial.
On the other side, the Indians are up against Tony as well.
Tony however, does not feel shame and is not ready to apologize, as he thinks it to be his right to say whatever he wants, regardless of the consequences.
