Scotland’s captain, Gordon Drummond, has praised the bowling of Lasith Malinga and admitted that the Sri Lankan fast bowler was too hot to handle in the third match of the Tri-Nation Tournament at the Grange Cricket Club Ground, Raeburn Place, Edinburgh on July 13, 2011.
Malinga picked up a five wicket haul against the home team after giving away just 30 runs in his spell of 9.4 overs. As a result, Scotland was bundled out for a mere 101 runs and Sri Lanka won the match by a huge margin of 183 runs.
The right-arm bowler has a very different action as compared to the orthodox bowlers, as he delivers the ball with a slinging action. It has made him very difficult to read for even the best of the batsmen. Malinga performed exceptionally well in the last two World Cups and made his name as a high-class performer.
He was also the leading wicket-taker of the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League this year and helped Mumbai Indians do well in the event.
The Scotland captain said that Malinga’s yorkers and the slower deliveries are very difficult to pick because of his action.
Drummond said, “He is world class and unfortunately we came up against him at his best and didn't have an answer. I think it's the uniqueness of how he delivers the ball. We knew he was going to be difficult to face but knowing it and actually doing something about it is different things. In particular, his slower ball is awkward to see.”
Malinga has retired from the longer version of the sport and now he is just focusing on limited overs cricket, where he is considered to be at his devastating best.
Although, Scotland lost the match but Drummond was happy with the performance of his bowlers and fielders, who performed better as compared to their last match against Ireland.
"Looking back from yesterday, I think we fielded and bowled a lot better with a couple of exceptions. I thought we could have kept them down to 260, obviously a few sixes got them up there,” he added.
