Bangladesh played better cricket throughout admits Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Sachin Tendulkar’s 100th century celebrations were subdued by Bangladesh, who defeated the defending champions by five-wickets in the fourth match of the Asia Cup 2012 played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur on Friday, March 16.

The Bengal Tigers chased down a humongous target of 290, set by the Indians. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian skipper, admitted that Bangladesh was the better team on the day and that they deserved to win.

Crediting Bangladesh for the win, Dhoni said, “Bangladesh can play really well on their day, they used the conditions well, their reverse swing bowling was good. And they got the partnerships going. They played better cricket throughout. They began well and capitalised on that. They made sure they spent time at the crease. ”

Team India was in control of the match, until the end of the 35th over of the Bangladesh innings. The required run rate had climbed to 8.53 rpo but the Bangladeshi had wickets in hand and it worked to their advantage.

The Bengal Tigers went haywire in the batting power-play, decapitating the Indian bowlers and scoring 46 runs from the third power-play.

Dhoni scorned of the talks that the Indian bowlers lack talent. The Skipper of the team said that his bowlers came under pressure and failed to execute their plans. The wicket-keeper batsman hopes that his compatriots will learn from this experience.

He said, “At the start of the Powerplay our bowlers felt the pressure and crumbled. Talent is there. They just need to execute plans with consistency. The youngsters will learn more. They will start performing. They felt the pressure today. A bit more runs on the board would have been better.”

India now find themselves in a do or die situation. The Men in Blue face arch-rivals Pakistan in their next game of the Asia Cup – on Sunday, March 18. Pakistan has already reached the final, while India needs to win their match against the Green Shirts to have a chance of progressing.

Dhoni urged his players not to make the same mistakes against Pakistan. The skipper wants his players to focus on their performance and not think about winning.
