Bangladesh pulled off a remarkable five wicket
over India in the fourth One Day International of the Asia Cup 2012 played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur on Friday, March 16.
Bangladeshi skipper, Mushfiqur Rahim, dedicated this rare win to their deceased partner Manjural Islam Rana, who died on the very same day five years ago.
Paying tribute to the late cricketer, who died at the age of 22 after meeting with an accident, Rahim said, “It is a huge win for us. We will dedicate this match to our friend, Manjural Islam Rana who died on this day 5 years back.”
Bangladesh did the unthinkable at Mirpur, as they chased down a mammoth total of 289-runs with the loss of five wickets, and are now in contention for the finals, if they beat Sri Lanka on March 20.
The skipper of the Bengal Tigers was content with the efforts of everyone in the team and said that they all performed their jobs. Rahim also thanked the supporters for showing faith in their team and bucking them throughout the game. He said, “We bowled really well and were backed up by the fielders. The batsmen then played according to the plan. We are thankful for the crowd which kept on egging us.”
The Bangladeshi skipper won the toss and made the right call by fielding first. The wicket-keeper batsman was very sound behind the stumps and took the catch of Sachin Tendulkar, who got out after scoring his 100th century. Rahim later in the Bangladeshi innings bludgeoned 46-runs off just 25 deliveries to see his side over the finish line.
However, it was the flamboyant all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan who was declared the man of the match for scoring 49-runs and completing his quota of ten overs.
Hasan said that the win was the result of a combined effort by the Bangladeshi team. The 24-year-old said, “Very happy with the way we played, great team performance. Our batting was very sensible, we upped the ante at the right time. The top-order batted very sensibly and the later order including myself finished it off. Nasir supported me really well and Mushfiq was superb towards the end.”
