Yuvraj Singh, the Indian middle-order batsman, has expressed that he is working extremely hard to regain fitness and form ahead of returning to international cricket in the T20 series against New Zealand. The cricketer from Punjab wants to win the forthcoming ICC World T20 2012 for his country.
In the inaugural edition of the illustrious tournament in 2007, played in South Africa, the left-handed batsman made a name for himself by smashing six sixes in an over. The Men in Blue later went on to win the tournament.
The all-rounder has been out of international cricket since the last year, having suffered from cancer, which threatened to end his career.
The 30-year-old cricketer is considered to be one of the most destructive players in the shorter formats of the game. His power-hitting is why Yuvraj has been selected for the World T20 without having to prove his fitness in domestic cricket.
Yuvraj expressed that he could not play any regional sport because of the off-season in India but revealed that he has been working hard in the National Cricket Academy. The left-hander cannot wait to taste international cricket after a long time.
"I am practising hard at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore," he said. "If you look at the last three months, I am really training hard and peaking well. I am looking forward to play my first game after a year."
Yuvraj’s match-fitness has been a concern for the Indian selectors but the left-hander believes that he will be back to his usual best before the mega event starts because he will get many games to assess his strengths and weaknesses.
"I had played three practice games at NCA. I will get some serious match practice in the two matches against New Zealand scheduled September 8 and 11. Then, I would be playing two more practice matches. So, you see, I will be having seven games before the World Cup. I will be having enough match practice," the aggressive batsman added.
