The police of Tamil Nadu, a South Indian state, has told the Madras High Court that it is unable to arrest the Indian cricket rock-star, Sachin Tendulkar,
and Tennis celebrity, Sania Mirza, in a case of desecration of the
national flag, registered against
them in the state. The security agencies claim that they cannot take
any step in this regard on their own as they need permission from the
central government.
Tendulkar, on the eve of his 37th birthday on 10 March,
2011, cut a cake which was in shape of India’s national flag while
Sania, during a TV shooting in May 2010, put her feet on guitar that had
three colours like that of the flag.
Thus, both these sporting personalities were accused of insulting
their national emblem and some statesmen filed cases against them.
The Police authorities have come up to defend themselves against the
recent petition by an advocate, B Stalin, requiring the state police to
put criminal charges on both Sachin and Sania.
Along with police, some analysts too believe that it is difficult for
the police or the court to book the duo as they enjoy great respect and
elite status not only in India but at the International level.
Tendulkar is regarded as ‘God of Cricket’ in India
and a large number of the natives worship him for his life-long
services to the game. The legendary batsman poses to be the highest
scorer in both Test and ODI formats of cricket. Moreover, he has
recently
earned the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 glory for his nation with his tireless efforts.
Sania is the world Tennis star and the first Indian who has made
inroads into the top 30 ranks of the World Tennis Association (WTA).
Apart from this, she has won many awards and titles in international
competitions. Sania is also married with the Pakistani
cricket all-rounder, Shoaib Malik.
In this way, both the celebrities have certain privileges that
separate them from other nationals. However, if the federal government
of India allows the police to go ahead, Sachin and Sania may face some
problems.
